Qualcomm’s new platform and its Mesh Networking Reference Design aim to help make it easier to build out connected device solutions

Earlier this week Qualcomm unveiled its Mesh Networking Platform, which it is positioning as an inroad to better connected home experiences for consumers. Qualcomm wants to make it easier for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to build and deploy these Internet of Things (IoT) efforts. Full details in the press release announcing the platform.

The platform works to boost connectivity between the devices and the network, while adding a host of new features and capabilities for consumers as well.

“New capabilities like voice assistance and IoT radio integration will not only transform consumer experiences at home, but along with carrier-grade feature enhancements, make it easier for our customers to adopt and deploy mesh systems aligned to how people want their networks to perform,” Gopi Sirineni, vice president of product management at Qualcomm Technologies, said in the release.

Qualcomm’s IPQ40x8/9 network system-on-chip is the foundation of the platform, the release said, and also includes a Qualcomm Wi-Fi Self-Organizing (SON) feature suite that helps to improve network coverage, optimize traffic, and boost security. Using Wi-Fi SON, broadband carriers can enhance their services and get access to remote monitoring, diagnostics, and analytics tools as well.

As mentioned above, the Qualcomm Mesh Networking Platform has its own voice integrations as well. This means that users can control their smart home devices with voice commands through the platform itself. It also provides API support for other “popular cloud-based assistant applications” as well, the release said.

For backhaul, the platform can utilize 802.11ac, 802.11ad, 802.11ax, and Powerline technologies, the release said. Additionally, Qualcomm’s IoT Connectivity Feature Suite helps with the simultaneous use of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, CSRmesh connectivity, and 802.15.4 technologies as well, the release noted.

In addition to the platform, Qualcomm also unveiled its Mesh Networking Reference Design. This helps manufacturers go to market faster with new networking solutions and helps partners and OEMs better differentiate themselves in terms of their offerings.

Key Aspects on IOT networking

  1. The Qualcomm Mesh Networking Platform is a new effort to help OEMs deliver smart home and connected IoT deployments.
  2. Voice integrations mean that users can interact with their connected home devices through the platform.
  3. Qualcomm also unveiled its Mesh Networking Reference Design, which could make it faster and easier for OEMs to take their next-generation networking products to market.
